MARGATE – After 31 years as an educator in the Margate school district, Supervisor of Instruction Loreen Cohen retired at the end of August. On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the Board of Education honored her for her leadership of school staff and her lasting impact on students.

Superintendent Audrey Becker said Cohen started her educational career in the Eugene A. Tighe Middle School in 1990 as a science teacher fresh out of college.

“I have a lot of fond memories of us being eighth grade homeroom teachers when we first started,” she said. “Our classrooms were right across from each other, so we spent a lot of time together early in our careers.”

Cohen was always ready to lend a hand to her colleagues and helped organize the end of school year activities and eighth grade graduations each year.

Cohen started as supervisor of curriculum and instruction in 2014.

“Her knowledge, dedication and problem solving skills quickly made her a critical member of our administrative team and her leadership and logical decision making is a big reason why the Tighe School was successful enough to earn the national Blue Ribbon in 2017,” Becker said. “Her direct impact on many of our staff and students…will last for generations to come.”

Board member Jack Sorenson, an honors teacher at Atlantic City High School, commended Cohen for her work preparing students for high school.

“The kids from Margate were always prepared and ready to learn…That is the best compliment I can give you,” he said. “You did a great job.”

Teacher Jessica Cuevas said Cohen was fun to be around and always offered support for extra-curricular activities.

“She has always been there for every fundraiser we dreamed up. You have been a right hand woman. Your gifts are far and wide,” she said.

And Margate Education Association President Sherry Scott said she worked side-by-side with Cohen as a science teacher.

“She is a friend. She’s funny, witty and caring, she’s always made me laugh,” Scott said.

“It has been an honor to serve this community all these years,” Cohen said. “This is home for me.”
