SOMERS POINT – The newly formed  South Jersey Chapter of USRowing’s Coastal Rowing Working Group will be hosting a fundraising event Saturday, Feb. 26 at Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar, 900 Shore Road, to promote the organization, which will tap into the rich history of rowing in South Jersey and provide rowers with a new sport to enjoy for recreation and competition.

The sport, which is performed in open water, would include singles, doubles and quad boats in male, female and mixed boat categories. According to organizers, coastal rowing bridges the gap between open-water and flat-water rowing.

“Our group is looking forward to making the sport grow and expand here in South Jersey,” organizing committee member David Funk said. “It’s something new and exciting for the rich history of rowing in South Jersey.”

The event is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will include light fare. Tickets are $30 at the door. Proceeds will help to purchase boats and rowing equipment.
