Margate Police Chief Matthew Hankinson Thursday, Feb. 2 advised city residents and visitors to take simple precautions to prevent them from becoming a victim of crime.

“There has been a recent rash of car burglaries in offshore communities,” Hankinson said. “Lock your car doors and don’t invite crime.”

Somers Point Police recently reported multiple calls for thefts from unlocked motor vehicles, sheds and garages during the overnight hours.

“We remind all residents to be vigilant and secure their property,” police advised on Facebook.

According to the State Police, the vast majority of auto thefts involve vehicles stolen when the key fob is left in the vehicle or the vehicle is left running. These incidents are commonly referred to as “crimes of opportunity.”

Follow these simple safety tips:

  • Never leave your keys or key fob in your vehicle;
  • Do not leave your vehicle running while unattended;
  • Park your car in well-lit areas;
  • Ensure all windows are closed;
  • Hide your valuables; and
  • Make sure all doors are locked.

Police in Somers Point are seeking video footage from the last week that could provide leads for the investigation.

Anyone seeing suspicious activity is advised to call police dispatch 24/7.
