EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Members of the Atlantic-Cape May Counties Sustainable Jersey Hub met at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center on English Creek Avenue Wednesday evening to discuss ways to landscape homes and gardens using sustainable plants and methods.

Sustainable Margate was there to advocate for banning gas-powered leaf blowers in favor of battery-operated ones. A representative of Sustainable Princeton explained to the crowd gathered in the multi-purpose room how the city engaged stakeholders, including small minority-owned landscaping companies, nonprofit organizations and city government officials, to create an incentive program that made it financially viable for landscapers to make the switch to battery-powered equipment.

Not only did the effort reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it also reduced noise pollution.

After the presentation, green teams from various communities had a few minutes to explain their sustainable landscaping practices, that included removing invasive species, planting native trees and plants, and more. Members of the public stopped by the tables around the room to chat individually with green team members. Refreshments were served, including subs and soft drinks.

The seminar, which attracted members of the community interested in learning more about sustainability practices, is part of an ongoing effort to create a healthier environment in New Jersey.
