LONGPORT – After borough lifeguards conducted more than 650 rescues over the four-day holiday weekend, one of the Longport Beach Patrol’s top guards was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

Commissioner of Public Safety Dan Lawler administered the oath of office Wednesday, July 5 to Max Mittelman, who assisted and supervised lifeguards during the busy 4th of July weekend.

“He does a great job as lifeguard,” Longport Beach Patrol Chief Tom Kresz said. “He’s been a competitive runner, paddleboarder, swimmer for us, and is a three-time Red Bull Surf and Rescue champion.”

Kresz said despite a higher than normal number of rescues last weekend, Mittelman stepped right into his new role as a leader of the beach patrol.

“We’re looking forward to years to come with max in his new position,” Kresz said.

Members of the Longport Beach Patrol were on-hand to witness fellow lifeguard Max Mittelman sworn-in to the rank of lieutenant.
