MARGATE – The Margate Business Association Thursday, July 6 announced the recipients of the Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship Program. Mary Wagner, who graduated from Atlantic City High School and Claire Brooks of Ocean City High School were each awarded $2,500 to use toward their college educations. The awards presentations were made at the Margate City Public Library with Mayor Michael Collins and MBA representatives present.

Students who applied were required to submit adult references and documentation regarding their academic achievements, volunteer service and an essay about a book they feel should never be included on a list of banned books. Both students are distinguished scholars, academic athletes, members of the National Honor Society, and volunteer for numerous school and community organizations.

Wagner will attend Villanova University where she will major in finance, and Claire Brooks will pursue a marketing degree at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

The scholarships are funded in part from proceeds from the annual MBA Wine Tasting event held each summer. The 20th annual wine tasting event will be held 6 p.m. Friday, July 28 at the Edgmar Circle recreation field. The event features wine and spirits tastings, food and an array of auction items. The band The Usual Suspects will perform.

Since its inception, the scholarship program has awarded more than $125,000 in aid for higher education to high school seniors who have attended Margate City schools and are continuing their studies.

The wine tasting event also supports the MBA Children Fund which anonymously provides warm clothing, school supplies, food, eyeglasses, summer camp for latch key children, toys and more for children of the Margate schools.
