MARGATE – The Fire Department welcomed two new firefighters Thursday, July 6. Commissioner of Public Safety Cathy Horn swore in Daniel Campbell Jr. and Kyle Deroo, both of whom are lifelong Margate residents.

Both men scored well on the Civil Service exam for firefighters and will replace a retired firefighter and another who will soon retire, Fire Chief Dan Adams said.

Campbell obtained an emergency medical technician certificate in April and soon after started training at the Atlantic County Fire Academy. Adams said he completed his Firefighter 1 training course provided by members of the Margate City Fire Department.

He is a graduate of Blessed Sacrament parochial school, Holy Spirit High School, and a 2014 graduate of Coastal Carolina University where he obtained a degree in communication. He enjoys the beach, fishing on the pier and spending time with his family.

Campbell is assigned to Platoon 2 and is one of the department’s primary EMS personnel, Adams said.

Kyle Deroo takes the oath of office for the position of Margate City firefighter.

An Atlantic City lifeguard for the last 11 years, Deroo came to the department in February with his EMT certificate in hand. He completed Firefighter 1 training at the Atlantic County Fire Academy, receiving the highest score on the written exam.

He attended the Margate City public schools and is a graduate of Holy Spirit High School. Before attending Stockton University, he took a backpack tour of Southeast Asia, where he learned jiu-jitsu in Thailand. He started his own jiu-jitsu business in 2021.

Deroo is assigned to Platoon 3 and is also primary EMS personnel handling emergency calls.

Campbell signs the oath of office.
