Rabbi Lynnda Targan

LONGPORT – Rabbi Lynnda Targan left her life as a public relations professional at the age of 50 to become an ordained rabbi in 2003.

“At a time when most of my friends were retiring or slowing down, I was compelled to take the rigorous journey to become a rabbi, a choice that for generations was open only to men.”

Her memoir, “Funny, You Don’t Look Like a Rabbi: A Memoir of Unorthodox Transformation,” follows her story of self-discovery and overcoming skepticism.

Originally from Philadelphia, Rabbi Targan has spent multiple summers at the Jersey Shore, even referring to her home in Longport and her runs on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in her new book.

Longport Public Library welcomes local authors to include their books in the collection for the Longport community to read.

Since opening in 2017, Longport Public Library has welcomed local authors to come speak to the community as part of each year’s Summer Authors Series. Local authors in 2019 included Lauren Grodstein and Jane Kelly. After the success of last year’s events, the library plans to invite each of these local authors back in 2021, including an event with Rabbi Targan.

Longport Public Library has copies of Rabbi Targan’s book available for circulation to patrons. Holds can be placed through the online catalog or over the phone. Please call Longport Public Library with any questions 609-487-7403.
