Location of offshore wind farm.
LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners is seeking public input from resident on a proposed wind farm to be located 15 miles offshore Atlantic County.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is reviewing a Construction and Operations Plan submitted by Ocean Wind, LLC, which is seeking approval to build the Ocean Wind Offshore Wind Farm Project approximately 15 miles southeast of Atlantic City.
The project includes installation of up to 98 wind turbine generators, three offshore substations, inter-array cables linking the individual turbines to the offshore substations and other wind farm specific work including offshore export cables that would be buried below the seabed within federal and state waters. The onshore export cables, substations and grid connections would be located in Ocean and Cape May counties.
The diagram above shows that the energy generated by the windfarm will be sent through underground cables to the closed B.L. England Generating Station and the closed Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station. There has been discussion about re-opening the Oyster Creek location as a new generation nuclear generating facility.
“Wind energy, as we all know, is an alternative to traditional coal powered electric or nuclear powered generation plants,” Mayor Nicholas Russo said in a statement requesting feedback.
The BOEM is in the process of preparing and Environmental Impact Statement and is seeking feedback from interested parties.

Public comments can be provided to the BOEM until April 29. However, the entire approval process will continue for several months.
