ATLANTIC CITY – Accomplished Ventnor artist, illustrator and musician Steve Kuzma will be sharing his artwork with the public to raise awareness and support for the peaceful people of Ukraine during a series of events being held at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University.

Some of the artwork on display at his Atlantic City studio was painted during the time Kuzma, who is of Ukrainian descent and speaks the language, spent in Kyiv in the early 2000s.

“What is happening in Ukraine is so sad. I was moved to create a series of events featuring music and art that will inspire awareness and support for the people of Ukraine,” he said.

Some of the paintings were done in locations that depict scenes of the country’s beauty and culture.

“They offer the color, mood and a sense of depth that will give people a view of the beauty that is being destroyed,” he said.

Catherine Kuzma 26 x 36 inches, watercolor, Kyiv.

Kuzma was in Kyiv at Easter time and his paintings reflect the sense of “renewal” he felt while he was there.

“The people are peaceful, and all religions and several nationalities are represented,” he said.

Although the people of Ukraine are suffering now, his artwork will help viewers understand the beauty and culture of the land and people currently under siege.

“The essence of the region is reflected in my works,” he said.

Kuzma’s ethereal paintings are done in oils, water-mixable oils, and watercolor on paper and canvas. A recipient of the Jackson Pollock- Krasner award, he calls his style of painting modern impressionist.

A supporter of the local community, his healing arts paintings and murals have graced the walls of AtlantiCare’s medical buildings and the Hansen Foundation facilities, where so many people are in recovery from addiction.

“I like to connect people to nature, which can bring a feeling of peace and healing tranquility,” he said. “I’m happy to be part of that growth and recovery.”

Kuzma said he wants to use the gifts he has been given to help ease the pain and suffering of others.

“Seeing what’s going on there, is a wake-up call for me at a time where our shared humanity and freedom is at stake. I see these paintings as a reflection of how we have the freedom to help each other.”

Kuzma said he will hold the weekend exhibits and music sessions at his studio at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University, 2200 Fairmount Ave. in Atlantic City, which serves as the cornerstone of the city’s arts district. Its mission is to promote education, provide resources for emerging artists, and enrich the community.

“I’m hoping to effect positive change knowing there is a higher constant in our lives where we can go and find a place of understanding,” he said.

Visit the Arts Garage noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 13 when Kuzma will have the paintings on display.

Proceeds of the sale of his artworks will be donated to the Ukrainian Federation of America, which can provide the funds where they are needed most.
