The New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition is promoting a social media campaign to educate drivers about the state’s newly adopted Safe Passing Law. According to the coalition, with the help of the public spreading the word, New Jersey roads can be made safer for all users, including bicyclists.

By issuing the SafePass4NJ Challenge, the social media users are invited to create their own unique campaigns using a photo or video and posting it on social media using the hashtag #SafePass4NJ and NJBWC. Depending on which platform you’re posting to, use the handle @NJBikeWalkCoalition for Facebook or @NJBikeWalk for Twitter or Instagram.

Photos and videos can include a demonstration on how to follow the law, explaining the reasons for the law, why you think it is important to follow the law or anything you think of that will help spread the word and encourage others to follow the law.

The law went into effect March 1 to prevent near misses, injuries and deaths that occur on streets and roads. Simply stated, the law requires motorists to slow down and carefully pass bicyclist on the road leaving 4-5 feet of space between the vehicle and the bicycle.

The coalition will highlight their favorite entries on their social media platforms.

Those who wish to participate by the July 15 deadline can check out the Downloads & Resources page in the NJSPL Resource Center.
