LONGPORT – The Board of Commissioners June 7 adopted revisions to the borough’s short-term rental ordinance. It also introduced an ordinance expanding hours dogs are allowed on the beach.
The ordinance requires owners of all properties being rented for less than one year to obtain a registration certificate from the Building Department. No one shall rent a property for less than 14 days and must comply with all borough ordinances.
The revised ordinance, which passed a public hearing where no one spoke for or against it, requires the property owner to list their name or that of an agent who can act on their behalf and will assume responsibility for the property, with the Building Department prior to the rental. The registration fee is $25. The owner must o provide a certificate of insurance of no less than $500,000.
The owner is also responsible for obtaining an annual property inspection to ensure the unit is fit for habitation and complies with all borough ordinances. The annual inspection fee to obtain a rental certificate is $75.
In other business, the board adopted an electric vehicle charging station ordinance for publicly accessible charging stations.
It also introduced an ordinance revising the hours dogs are allowed on the beach. The public requested the board consider expanding hours for residents and visitors to walk their dogs on the beach during the summer months.
According to the ordinance, leashed dogs will be permitted on the beach fronting the Atlantic Ocean 6:30-8:30 a.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. from May 1 to Sept. 30. Dogs are permitted on the beach anytime from Oct. 1 to April 30. In all instances, dogs may not be permitted to run free and must be leashed at all times.
A public hearing on the ordinance will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 21.
