MAYS LANDING – Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections Maureen G. Bugdon is calling for residents to register to vote on National Voter Registration Day, Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Bugdon joins thousands of other election officials across the country to celebrate National Voter Registration Day, a civic holiday that aims to help all eligible voters participate in democracy. The nonpartisan day of action will involve coordinated field, technology, and media efforts to register voters and raise awareness of state-specific registration policies, deadlines, and voting information.

To help ensure the further success of the holiday, Bugdon is calling on community partners in Atlantic County to join in this effort by hosting a virtual registration drive on National Voter Registration Day.

“Online voter registration is now available in New Jersey, making it easier than ever to register to vote,” Bugdon said. “We encourage our community partners and residents to visit www.Vote.NJ.gov to check their voter registration status and/or register to vote from their computer, tablet or smart phone. It’s the fastest way to ensure you are eligible for the upcoming Nov. 3 General Election.”

Online voter registration in New Jersey was introduced in early September with more than 50,000 individuals taking advantage of the online offering in the first two weeks alone.

“National Voter Registration Day serves as a fabulous reminder for high schools, colleges, community groups and other organizations to get involved civically.  2020 is a milestone year, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage (the right of women to vote in elections), as well as it being a presidential election cycle,” Bugdon said.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted voter registration numbers earlier this year and New Jersey’s online voter registration process is a great way to counter some of that impact, she said.

“Atlantic County is honored to once again join in this national effort and we invite you to visit www.Vote.NJ.gov in order to register and participate in America’s voting franchise.”

National Voter Registration Day is held on the fourth Tuesday in September. Since 2012, nearly 3 million voters have registered on the holiday.
