LONGPORT – One of the eight candidates vying for a seat on the Longport Board of Commissioners said she has withdrawn from the election, although not soon enough for her name to be removed from the ballot.
Veronica Iezzi, a retired business owner who has lived in Longport for 22 years, was running on the “Always Honest, Realistic and Committed” ticket in an effort to “give back” to the community she loves.
After receiving notification that Downbeach.com was sending questionnaires to all the candidates asking their opinions on issues affecting the borough, she informed the online news source that she was no longer interested in seeking election to the board.
Longport Borough Clerk Monica Kyle said Iezzi went to Borough Hall on Friday, Oct. 2 and spoke with a co-worker about her intention to withdraw, but nothing had been received in writing.
Atlantic County Deputy Clerk Michael Somers said the county also has not received “official notification that Iezzi has withdrawn.
According to Somers, a candidate would have to send “something very simplistic” in writing to officially be withdrawn from the ballot prior to it being printed and mailed.
“That process started on Sept. 21,” Somers said.
The U.S. Postal Service has already delivered ballots to Longport residents.
In a telephone conversation today, Iezzi said she has decided to throw her support behind a slate of candidates she believes can win the election.
“I want to thank all the people who signed my petition, but I decided to withdraw and am backing Bob (English), Fran (Caulfield) and Jim (Ulmer),” she said. “They have a great campaign and a campaign manager and have been meeting with people at luncheons. They are an established team and are focusing on the same things I am focused on, such as term limits, flooding and addressing the mold issue, and I believe they will do it.”
Iezzi said she believes some people have already voted for her.
Iezzi said that she has received her ballot in the mail and will be returning it on Nov. 3 at the polling place at Borough Hall.
