VENTNOR – The Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing 5:30 p.m. June 10 on an ordinance codifying the rates charged to purchase water meters.
Until now, the city did not have an ordinance outlining the cost of purchasing water meters of various sizes. The new ordinance sets out the cost for 1- to 4-inch meters, whether they be in a pit or inside a home.
According to Commissioner Lance Landgraf, the ordinance is an add-on to Chapter 47 of the Municipal Code setting the fees for 1-inch meters at $600, 1-inch in-pit meters at $900, 5/8-inch inside building meters at $550, 2-inch pit meters at $2,750, 3-inch pit meters at $3,500, and 4-inch pit meters at $4,500.
“It’s mostly for new construction,” Landgraf said.
Older meters contain brass fittings and can fail, but the new meters, which are in stock, do not have brass components and will last longer, he said.
In other business, the board adopted an ordinance limiting the hours for construction to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, when the use of pile driving, demolition and jack hammers will be prohibited. No construction may take place on Sundays. After the summer season, construction hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Homeowners making repairs to their own homes are exempt from the regulation. Property owners can also request a waiver from the Building Department in the event of a hardship.
The commission also approved an ordinance allowing restaurants to serve food along sidewalks as long as they maintain a 3-foot pathway for pedestrians. For non-food related businesses, sidewalk sales are permitted in an area no more than 4 feet from the face of the building. Merchandise may not be sold out of cardboard boxes.
The commissioners also approved a $6,998 contract for Calvi Electric Company to upgrade the electrical service at the Newport Avenue gazebo. The service will supply an ample amount of power for concerts and special events.
Also during the May 27 meeting, the commissioners discussed bicycles on the boardwalk. According to Commissioner of Public Safety and Community Affairs Tim Kriebel, the commission will consider revising its ordinance to more closely mirror bicycle hours on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
